SAFETY TIPS UPDATE

THIS INFORMATION IS SENT EACH YEAR AS A REMINDER TO HELP US ALL STAY SAFE IN OUR COMMUNITY. NEW SUGGESTIONS ARE WELCOME.
SPECIAL CONSIDERATION:  We have children playing and people walking their pets on every street.  Please slow to 25 mph when driving through the neighborhoods.

We have senior neighbors living in our community. Some seniors don't hear very well and don't have email access. Please help to keep them informed and safe.

Share N/W emails and our website address http://fbestates.yolasite.com
with your friends and family to help them stay safer too.

SAFETY SUGGESTIONS

  • If you have a home security system....please use it.  Alarms insideand outside are advised.
  • Crime in progress - Call the Sheriff 874-5111 or call 911 or PUSH YOUR PANIC BUTTON ON YOUR ALARM SYSTEMthen email or call Marva at 962-2300 to send out an Alert.
  • Security cameras are costly but helpful.  Inside and Outside.
  • Trim bushes around your windows, gates and fences.
  • House numbers should be easily visible for emergency vehicles to see.
  • Secure pet doors when you're away for long periods of time.
  • Pet ProtectionCanine poisonings reported prior to burglaries!  Dogs don't always deter criminals and will hide in fear or lick the suspect who has a treat.
  • Use combination locks on all your gates leading into your backyard.
  • Use a wooden dowel as a stopper or 1-1/4 inch screw in the top of the door frame of sliding doors.
  • Locked mailboxes are advised or garage door mailbox slots.
  • When leaving for a weekend or vacation, let your surrounding neighbors know that you'll be away and when you'll return.
  • Contact VIPS for a free sheriff's patrol while you're gone. (see website for information http://fbestates.yolasite.com/Vac Patrol)
  • Stop your mail or paper delivery or ask someone to pick it up daily while you're on vacation. Have your garbage cans put out as normal and brought back inside.
  • Use timers on indoor lights while you're away so it appears someone is home at night.
  • Open your window coverings slightly during the daytime so it appears someone home...particularly those facing the street.
  • Leave a TV or stereo on while you're gone so it sounds like someone is inside your home.
  • Add extra lighting around your home.  Motion lights are helpful but electrical lights that are on a timer are advised.
  • Exterior Lighting - Light up the house. Regularly replace light bulbs on garage door lighting, the front porch and yard.
  • SMUD will install lights on their poles on your property.  Call SMUD for information.
  • Scam artists.  Always ask for identification...and NEVER allow them into your home even if they use one of your neighbors' names to gain entry.
  • Don't open your door unless you know who is standing on the other side.
  • Use your iPhone to take pictures of suspicious people.
  • Phony Fundraisers - Kids are scamming by asking for money for phony school events.
  • Thieves are watching UPS and Fed Ex trucks, stealing packages or looting, especially during the holidays.
  • On your home answering machine, never say "no one is home right now."  Burglars may be the caller.  Kids should never say "my parent's aren't home."
  • Post emergency numbers on your refrigerator or in one central location.  Non-emergency Sheriff - 874-5115, Emergency Sheriff - 874-5111 or Call 911
  • GPS systems are a current target.  Lock your vehicle or you may come home to an empty house.
  • Lock your doors and security screen doors day and night...front andback, including leading from the garage into the house.  Use dead bolt locks on your doors.
  • Do not allow "driving lessons" on your streets.  A car could end up in your living room!
  • Park in your garage or driveway to avoid becoming a victim of vandalism.
  • Use your car alarm.  Note: Sometimes if the car window is broken the alarm won't sound.
  • Don't leave garage door openers or personal belongings in your vehicles.
  • When you close your garage door, make sure it closes all the way before you drive away.
  • Air Horns can be used at a window to scare a suspect or let your neighbors know you're in trouble.  ONLY use this in emergency situations AFTER calling the Sheriff or 911!  NEIGHBORS SHOULD NEVER GO OUTSIDE WHEN THEY HEAR AN AIR HORN.
  • Get to know your neighbors and be aware of their schedules.  Know their cars and their friends' cars. Know their kids and their comings and goings.  You are not being a nosy neighbor or being paranoid. You are learning to become aware when something is out of the ordinary in your neighborhood.

Things to watch out for:
  • Any unknown cars parked on your street.  Take down the license plate number and get a description of the car.  Take a picture.
  • If there is someone in a parked car and if you think it's safe, approach with caution.  Ask if you can help the person by telling them you're involved with N/W.  If you feel they don't belong, ask them to leave the neighborhood and tell them we call the Sheriff.  NEVER PUT YOURSELF IN HARMS WAY.  CALL THE SHERIFF OR 911 if you feel threatened.  Email Marva to send out a WARNING.
  • Strange cars frequently driving by slowly on your street. They should be watched.  Get a description of them and their car if you can.  Email Marva to send out a WARNING.
  • Strangers walking door to door or loitering on your streets.  Tell them we have Neighborhood Watch on every street, and ask if they need help.  If they're suspicious, ask them to leave the neighborhood or call the Sheriff at 874-5115.  Email Marva to send out a WARNING.
  • Someone unknown lurking around a neighbor's house.  If it's a contractor, call your neighbor and verify it first. Then...call the Sheriff's office to report the stranger.
  • Be aware of people posing as county workers, utilities workers, or SMUD workers in orange vests that are trying to gain access to your property.  Ask for a picture I.D. or proof of who they are.  Never allow access to your home or property without proper identification.
  • HEAR A NEIGHBOR'S ALARM GOING OFF? Check to see if they're home.  If not, call the Sheriff or 911, then call your neighbor to advise them.
  • SEE A CRIME IN PROGRESS at your neighbor's house - Call 911, then call Marva at 485-6331 to send out an Alert then call the neighbor to alert them. That's how we caught one bad guy in 2012!
  • NOT SURE WHAT'S GOING ON NEAR YOU?  Use your N/W Directory and CALL people.  Use the phone tree. DO NOT GO OUTSIDE TO INVESTIGATE.
  • HEAR A HELICOPTER? If it's safe, turn on all outside floodlights to help the Sheriffs see the ground. DO NOT GO OUTSIDE TO INVESTIGATE
